Ford, Universal, and Holoride Team Up To Create First-Ever In-Car Virtual Reality Experience

Ford has recently announced their partnership with Universal Pictures and the entertainment technology startup, holoride, to create a groundbreaking new in-car public entertainment experience that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

Powered by innovative holoride technology and set inside the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer, “Universal Monsters Presents: Bride of Frankenstein holoride” takes riders into the mysterious world of the Bride of Frankenstein, complete with newly created content from the horror movie gods themselves, Universal Monsters (in collaboration with immersion specialist REWIND).

This unique virtual reality experience will be offered to guests at Universal CityWalk Hollywood for a limited time beginning on October 14, and then continue on select dates through November 9. It marks holoride’s first offering to the general public following their successful debut at CES this past January.

“We are partnering with Ford and Universal to bring holoride’s immersive, elastic content to the general public,” said Nils Wollny, CEO and co-founder of holoride. “Riders will be able to experience first-hand what the future of in-vehicle entertainment looks like through the lens of the compelling story of the Bride of Frankenstein.”

To begin the experience, riders will step inside a 2020 Ford Explorer from designated pickup locations at Universal CityWalk. Once inside, riders must buckle their safety belts and don their VR headsets to take a drive through a reimagined world of horror as the Bride of Frankenstein seeks to deliver an important message to the monster himself.

Along the way, riders will encounter virtual monsters and ghoulish obstacles complete with sound effects and other visuals that fully adapt to the motion of the Explorer.

To accomplish this, holoride uses navigational data, like travel route and travel time, coupled with driving data from the Ford Explorer, like steering, accelerating, and stopping, to adapt each experience differently. This means no two rides are the same.

“The connected vehicle technology from Ford can help completely revolutionize what the in-car experience can be, moving us toward never-before-imagined productivity and entertainment in the vehicle,” said Brett Wheatley, Ford’s vice president of Mobility Marketing and Growth. “This collaboration allows us to showcase the promise of the connected vehicle and get essential customer feedback on what they want and don’t want in terms of immersive in-car entertainment experiences.”

If you’re heading to Los Angeles over the next few weeks, you can participate in this complimentary experience by visiting holoride.com/bride to schedule a ride. The experience will operate from Universal CityWalk on October 14-16, October 21-23, October 28-30, and Monday through Saturday the week of Nov 4-9. All rides on those dates take place between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. PST.
